Varieties of Conference Experience

The boundary between conferences and journals is blurring in computer science and information science. This perspective identifies probably causal factors as well as unintended consequences that are undermining research communities. I identify some of the experiments that have been undertaken to reduce the stress. I describe conference-journal hybrids, and also a model that might move in the other direction to restore the community maintenance function of conferences.
